Fresh Christmas Tree Entry, Care & Disposal

Entry/Exit: If you purchase a fresh Christmas tree, please wrap it in a blanket or plastic bag when you bring it into your apartment. Doing so will keep pine needles off of the floor and out of your carpet. Make sure your tree gets plenty of water at all times and never leave lights on unattended.

Tips to help you keep your tree fresher for longer.

  • Start with a healthy tree from a local tree farm.

  • Trim 1/2 inch off the base of the trunk before setting it up to help with water absorption.

  • Use a Christmas tree stand that can hold at least 1 gallon of water.

  • Check the water level daily, making sure the bottom 2 inches of the trunk is always immersed in water.

  • Help your tree stay hydrated by adding a cap full of Miracle-Gro® For Christmas Trees for every quart of water.

  • Keep your Christmas tree away from heat sources.

Disposal: Residents are responsible for the disposal of their trees. Trees can be disposed of in our dumpsters. You can recycle your tree at the Olmsted County Compost Site (located at 305 Silver Creek Rd. NE, Rochester); they will dispose of your tree for free.
